Christina Applegate Has Double Mastectomy

August 19, 2008

After being diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer this month, Christina Applegate has undergone a double mastectomy and says she's cancer free.

Earlier today on Good Morning America, the Samantha Who? star revealed her decision to have both her breasts removed even though cancerous lumps were only found in one breast.

"I'm clear," she told fellow cancer surviver Robin Roberts during the interview. "Absolutely 100 percent clear and clean. It did not spread. They got everything out, so I'm definitely not going to die from breast cancer."

Her decision to have surgery, which took place three weeks ago, was made after watching her mother, Nancy Priddy, battle breast cancer and then suffer a recurrence many years later.

"I didn't want to go back to the doctors every four months for testing and squishing and everything," she explained. "I just wanted to kind of be rid of this whole thing for me. This was the choice that I made, and it was a tough one."

As reported in the current issue of Star, Christina opted not to have chemotherapy so she can get pregnant. She will not undergo radiation either. Over the next eight months she will undergo reconstructive surgery.

"I'm gonna have cute boobs till I'm 90," the actress laughed.

The actress will return to the set of ABC's Samantha Who? when filming resumes in September. She will also appear in the TV special Stand Up to Cancer, airing Sept. 5 on ABC, CBS and NBC and raising funds for cancer research.

Christina is a brave brave woman, becasue breast cancer is an ugly thing and can make a woman not feel like a woman which is awful. Now that's a REAL woman.

I hope (and think she is) smart enough to know she is a lot more than a two mounds of fat with nipples on them? I have always likes seeing her in anything she has done and I know for a fact she will live a long and full life. She did the right and smart thing. If she Just Must have a pair of boobs she can buy them like so many others have done before her. She seems like a very nice person and I wish her well.

Good for you I had both removed 27 years ago and I am now 74 and still doing fine I hope you do as well. They are not a vital organ. Good Luck to you
